It was built by Bernini between 1658 and 1678 in the Baroque style for the Jesuits. Sant'Andrea al Quirinale is regarded as one of Bernini's finest achievements; he made the most of the confined site.
The church is built on an elliptical plan with an imposing entrance porch set on the shorter axis.
The interior is richly decorated with coloured marbles and stucco. The coffered gilded dome is adorned with stucco cherubs. The high altar, surrounded by Corinthian columns, is surmounted by a painting by Borgognone of the Crucifixion of St Andrew. Side chapels run around the church.
From the church you can also visit the rooms of St Stanislaus. Stanislaus Kostka was a saint of Polish origin who fled his family to join the Jesuits at the invitation of the Virgin. You can see the reconstruction of the rooms where he died.
