Rome's place in world history, first as the capital of the vast Roman Empire and then as the capital of Catholicism, has left it with an extraordinarily rich heritage.
You will find very fine ruins from antiquity, a reflection of that empire's power and wealth. Capital of the Catholic Church for nearly 2,000 years, Rome has a great number of churches representing the different architectural currents. Visiting them is free, and reveals marvels of architecture and art — the greatest architects, painters and artists took part in building and embellishing these religious buildings.
The city is also famous for the charm and beauty of its many squares, places to meet and linger, often lined with cafés in a magnificent setting.
Rome also has many other monuments — fountains, ancient sites put to new use — which are part of the charm and beauty of the Eternal City.
